Uncle Alan says beware the dreaded carrot fly, whose larvae burrow into the roots. Netting is often recommended to keep the adults at bay but, as they fly very close to the ground, a good alternative is to plant in raised beds or containers. Because carrot seeds are tiny you will inevitably get seedlings growing too close together. Simply pluck out and discard until the remaining seedlings have enough elbow room to grow to full size. x
